Unique memorial quilt exhibition at The Braid

Thursday 21 March 2024

A unique memorial quilt exhibition remembering local victims of the Troubles is being hosted in the Borough next week.

The ‘Tribute to Innocents’ memorial quilt exhibition features memories of 500 victims of the Troubles in a series of quilts - designed by the families of those who died.

The ‘Tribute to Innocents’ memorial quilt exhibition features memories of 500 victims of the Troubles in a series of quilts - designed by the families of those who died.

The quilt patches have all been made by families of those who died and each square is a poignant reminder of the individual. Memorial quilts tells the story of the Troubles in a very human way - encouraging those who view the patches to consider the individual being remembered and not simply the badge or affiliation which they had.

The exhibition is supported by the South East Fermanagh Foundation (SEFF) and is being held as part of the Veterans Support Programme of the Mid and East Antrim Council.

It will be showcased in The Braid and open to the public between 9am and 5pm on 26 and 27 March.

SEFF's Director Kenny Donaldson said: "We are pleased that Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has worked collaboratively with us in facilitating the display of our seven Memorial Quilts and our Organisational tapestry.

"The quilts were developed by a team of special volunteers within SEFF under the guidance of a project facilitator. The quilts humanise those being remembered who may be said to be ordinary people but who were actually extraordinary to those who they were known to best."

The exhibition is part of the ongoing Veterans Support Programme of Council, which was established in April 2023 and includes a walking group and talks programme as well as special events.
