New Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Mid and East Antrim

Alderman Beth Adger MBE has been appointed as the new Mayor of Mid and East Antrim. Councillor Bréanainn Lyness has been confirmed as the Borough’s Deputy Mayor.
The news was announced at the Council’s Annual General Meeting in The Braid, yesterday evening (3 June 2024). At the same meeting, Chairs, Deputy Chairs and members of Council’s committees were also agreed.
Braid and DUP representative Alderman Beth Adger MBE takes over the chain of office from Alliance party councillor Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, while Councillor Bréanainn Lyness a Sinn Féin representative for Ballymena, replaces Alderman Stewart McDonald as Deputy Mayor.
Mayor, Alderman Beth Adger MBE, said: “I am delighted and deeply honoured to take on the role of Mayor for Mid and East Antrim. It is a privilege to serve our community and I look forward to working closely with the Deputy Mayor to further the interests of all our residents. Together, we aim to build on the achievements of our predecessors and continue to enhance the quality of life for all residents across our Borough.
“Our Borough is rich in history, culture and natural beauty, and I am committed to promoting and preserving these aspects while driving forward our economic development plans. Over the coming year, I plan to engage with local businesses, community groups and residents to ensure that we are all working together towards a shared vision for a prosperous future.
“I am also eager to support initiatives that will ensure Mid and East Antrim remains a wonderful place to live for generations to come. Additionally, I will be nominating a charity of the year soon and I look forward to rallying support for causes that make a significant difference in our community.”
The role of the Mayor includes being the primary representative and spokesperson for the Council, presiding over Council meetings, and promoting the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the Borough.
The Mayor also supports various local events and initiatives, fostering community spirit and engagement.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Bréanainn Lyness, said: “It is an honour to be appointed as Deputy Mayor of Mid and East Antrim. I am excited to collaborate with the Mayor and our fellow councillors to serve the people of our Borough. I look forward to the year ahead and the opportunities it brings to make a positive impact on our community.
“My time as Deputy Mayor will be characterised by mutual respect and inclusivity, I plan to engage with a wide range of community organisations to ensure the council understands and meets their needs. Our differences should make us stronger, not divide us. As such by working together, I believe we can continue to achieve great things for Mid and East Antrim.”
