MEA lead the way with inclusive start-up entrepreneurship event

Thursday 12 September 2024

Local support organisations and budding entrepreneurs recently came together for Mid and East Antrim’s Labour Market Partnership and Go Succeed’s ‘Inclusive Startup’ event at Galgorm Resort in Ballymena.

Rhonda Lynn MEABC with Mayor Alderman Beth Adger MBE and Norman Sterritt NIUSE.

The event aimed to explore best practice in inclusive entrepreneurship - with a particular focus on disability and long-term health conditions.

Speakers included Katie Matthew-Furphy (The Mind Tribe), Michael Holden MBE (Accessoloo) and Ed McAuley (Ed’s Woodturning and Crafts) - who provided lived experiences surrounding their successful journeys to entrepreneurship.  Local support organisations Advice NI, Make the Call, Adapt NI, Department for Communities and Council’s Economic Development Team were also in attendance to highlight the wide range of expertise and support available.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Beth Adger MBE, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all the individuals who attended the event and hope that they felt encouraged in taking the first leap into self-employment - and navigating the extensive support available through initiatives like Go Succeed.

“We were privileged to hear from a dynamic line-up of speakers who offered their own personal experiences and provided invaluable advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and seasoned business owners alike.

“Lastly, I would like to thank the individuals and organisations who empower and advocate for greater inclusivity and opportunities for people with disabilities. Your work is invaluable and we look forward to hearing more success stories in the future.”

LMP Chair Norman Sterritt (Triangle Progression to Employment Service) reflected on the value brought to the event by the speakers. The unique set of circumstances and lived experienced that each of the speakers shared provided great inspiration for all who had the privilege of hearing their stories.

“It was heartening to see the positive interactions taking place between entrepreneurs and the wider range of support agencies represented. Many useful connections were undoubtedly made that can hopefully be further developed in the immediate and longer term.

“Self-employment for many individuals with disabilities and long-term health conditions can offer freedom and flexibility and an employment route that can be tailored to individual circumstances. I would encourage anyone to explore the possibilities that such a route can offer.”
