Launch of the 2024/25 Science Summer School initiative

Last week marked the exciting launch of the 2024/25 Science Summer School initiative - a groundbreaking STEAM programme co-founded by world-renowned physicist and broadcaster Professor Brian Cox CBE, FRS.

Designed to inspire and engage young minds, this dynamic initiative is hosted by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and sponsored by 11 local companies committed to fostering future talent in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The Science Summer School initiative will offer a comprehensive series of activities aimed at sparking creativity, curiosity, and a passion for STEAM subjects among primary and post primary school students. The programme will feature an array of engaging components, including:

• Competitions: encouraging students to think outside the box and apply their knowledge in creative ways
• School workshops: bringing STEAM concepts to life through interactive and hands-on learning experiences within schools
• Behind-the-scenes company visits: offering students a unique opportunity to explore how local businesses leverage STEAM to innovate and drive success

In January, the initiative will host a thrilling day of hands-on workshops, where participants can dive into a variety of whacky, experimental, and fun-filled activities.

This event will also feature inspiring TED-style talks delivered by leading industry experts, providing invaluable insights and real-world perspectives on the future of STEAM.

Attending the launch was Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Beth Adger MBE, who said:

"I am delighted that Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is hosting the Science Summer School Initiative for the third consecutive year. It’s wonderful to see how much this programme has grown, thanks to the increasing support from our local employers who are eager to be involved. This initiative is truly a collaborative effort, co-designed by companies and teachers to ensure it meets the needs of our students. It not only highlights the exciting opportunities available in STEAM careers but also plays a crucial role in guiding our young people on their journey towards a bright and successful future."

Graham Whitehurst MBE, Chair of the Manufacturing Task Force (MTF), shared his enthusiasm for the initiative:

"Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of young people and show them the incredible possibilities that STEAM subjects offer. By connecting students with industry leaders and providing them with practical, hands-on experiences, we hope to inspire the next generation of innovators, creators, and problem solvers."

Science Summer School 2024/25 is headlined by Kilwaughter Minerals and sponsored by Michelin Development, Ryobi, Caterpillar, Moore Concrete, GES, Teva, Terumo, Wright Bus, EPUKI and Phoenix Energy.

Science Summer School NI is a Manufacturing Task Force initiative and is supported by the Mid and East Antrim Labour Market Partnership and funded by the Department for Communities.
