Launch of Carrickfergus Heritage Hub Pop-up Shop

Wednesday 8 May 2024

Come along and celebrate the opening of the Carrickfergus Heritage Hub ‘Pop-up Shop’ this Saturday 11 May!

An aerial pic of Carrickfergus from the 1950’s.

The event, which will take place at 11am at 2 Joymount, will be opened by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna and special guest speaker will be none other than QUB archaeologist Ruairí Ó Baoill - the author of "Carrickfergus: The Story of the Castle and the Walled Town." No one knows more about the archaeology of Carrickfergus – he has been digging there since the 1990s!

Ruairí will be speaking about the forthcoming community dig at Shaftesbury Park, a project being undertaken by The Community Archaeology Programme NI (CAPNI) from 21 to 31 May. The dig is part of a three-year archaeological heritage program being rolled out across Northern Ireland, made possible thanks to a grant of more than £600,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to the Centre for Community Archaeology at Queen's University.

Carrickfergus and District Historical Society and Carrickfergus Museum are stakeholders in the project and have organised the pop-up shop to coincide with the excavation and act as a heritage hub.

There's still time to sign up to take part in the excavation! Register on the The Community Archaeology Programme Northern Ireland's online form.
