Christmas Message from Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Beth Adger MBE

Friday 13 December 2024

The lights have been switched on, the decorations are up and we’ve even had the first flurries of winter snow…yes, it’s that time of the year again.

As Christmas approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to herald the festive season by reflecting on the past year and expressing my warmest wishes to everyone in the Borough.

Serving as Mayor of Mid and East Antrim is an honour and, in this capacity, I have been fortunate to meet many wonderful people - all of whom I sincerely wish a healthy and happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Looking back on what we have accomplished in 2024, there is much to celebrate. Chief among our achievements is Council’s sustained effort to support citizens and the community via a range of initiatives. These include business growth programmes, key investments in town centres and community support for older people.

During my time in office, I have been inspired by our incredible local business owners, whose hard work and dedication continue to drive our local economy. Their enduring commitment has been a glowing tribute to all that this Borough stands for.

Supporting our local businesses, especially during the festive period, is vital. It remains a wonderful way to strengthen our community and help ensure their continued success into the new year.

I would also like to highlight the exceptional work of charities in the local area. Not only am I humbled by the volunteers who give so generously of their time; I am also deeply touched by the generosity of the people, businesses and community organisations in Mid and East Antrim who have supported my nominated charities during my year in office - Air Ambulance Northern Ireland and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

These organisations, along with many others, provide invaluable services year-round, and I am deeply grateful for their dedication. I encourage everyone to support charities where possible during this season of giving and good cheer.

It has been a pleasure attending the many vibrant events across our Borough this year—from summer festivals like the Larne Street Arts Festival and concerts in our beautiful parks, to the Halloween celebrations and festive Christmas light switch-ons.

These popular events, which attracted thousands of people, always bring us together and allow us to showcase the rich culture and community spirit that make Mid and East Antrim so special.

Looking ahead, there is much to be excited about - The £24 million i4C Innovation and Cleantech Centre in Ballymena, the Carrickfergus City Deal regeneration and the redevelopment of Carnfunnock Country Park are just some of the ambitious projects that will drive economic growth and enhance our area.

Of course, we cannot forget the Gobbins, a true gem in our Borough, and Gracehill’s recent success in achieving UNESCO World Heritage Site status—a recognition of our rich ancestry and a proud moment for us all.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to all Council staff and frontline workers for their tireless efforts throughout the year.

Your hard work and commitment ensure that vital services continue to run smoothly, and your dedication does not go unnoticed.

To those who will be working over the festive period to keep us safe and well—thank you.

I also want to express my gratitude to the people of Mid and East Antrim, who make it such a privilege for me to serve as First Citizen.

As we celebrate this Christmas season, let us also take time to remember everything our Borough has to offer, both locally and internationally.

Whether it’s our natural beauty, rich tradition or thriving businesses, this truly is a remarkable place to live, work, and visit.

And this year, Mid and East Antrirm is sparkling like never before, thanks to the magnificent new artificial Christmas trees, funded by the Department for Communities.

On a final note, I would like to wish all residents a peaceful, joyous, and happy Christmas.

May 2025 bring health, happiness, and prosperity to you and your loved ones.
