Saints, Scholars and Cement: A History of Magheramorne

A talk by Dr David Hume

Larne Museum & Arts Centre

Thursday 5 June 2025, 7.30pm – 9pm

The history of Magheramorne is linked to the limestone industry, with Ballylig Quarry operating as far back as the 1780s.

The quarry brought prosperity to the area in the 19th and 20th century and the modern history of Magheramorne is closely tied to employment on the land and at the quarry.

But Magheramorne has an older history too, as birthplace of Comgall, son of a Pictish warrior and a prominent missionary of the Early Celtic Church.

This talk brings us through centuries of history with a look at saints, poets, scholars, landowners, quarrymen and teachers.

A small rural area, you do not have to delve too deep in modern Larne to find a connection with Magheramorne!

This talk is taking place as part of Mid and East Antrim Industrial Heritage Week, June 2025.

This is a free event, however places are limited and should be booked in advance by contacting Larne Museum & Arts Centre on T: 028 2826 2443 or E: marian.kelso@midandeastantrim.gov.uk.

Light refreshments provided.
